utopia, anyone?

HELEN AND IVAN

A Fictional Saga of the Future

A Utopia by any Other Name…

Sir Jonathan McMaster was in charge of co-eds at the newly integrated School of Alabaster, in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies, eh?  He was uncertain that the coming of the co-eds was a beneficial move for Alabaster which had been male, exclusively, from 1888, when it was just established as a Western School by Malcolm Meagre, Knight, of Harvard’s Group of Schools, in Boston, Massachusetts.  The co-eds coming had profound effects on student life at Alabaster, as well as greatly altering the teachers’ attitudes.  Some teachers asked for transfers at the onset.  Some students did drop out.  All settled down in 18 months as students, teachers and their parents settled in to make the most of it.  The offerings of Alabaster were sincerely graded up to meet the needs of all ambitious students who had paid tremendous fees and social consequences to attend the Alabaster institution.

Ms. Helen Sokolowski was a fireball student who had garnered all scholastic and athletic firsts since she was kindergartener.  By high school in Chicago, in La Grange, a western suburb, where there was the famous school of Lyons Township, on a Cossett Street, named after John Q. Cossett, Jr., who had successfully established the La Grange development in 1878, and then had killed himself in agony because he was again accused of stealing funds from his investors, as he had done in the original La Grange, Louisiana, where he’d run to Illinois just after tar and feathering, Ms. Sokolowski was its number one.  In this atmosphere, the Lyons Township High School and the Cossett Street Elementary had become the shining stars of Illinois with superb athletic and top academic bold accomplishments, where Helen Sokolowski was a special star.  At Alabaster, Helen rose to head the class in everything!  Charismatic naturally, she became the president of Student Councils, where e’er she went.  And so it was at Alabaster.

Ivan Rabinowitz was the son of Jewish Russian immigrants to the New World who’d finally escaped the stifling atmosphere of Russia’s government.  The Doctors Rabinowitz were psychologists, professors at the famous Neurological Department at the famous University in St. Petersburg.  They lived in special quarters near the Hermitage and had together written many papers on conditioned reflex actions of all people starting in their childhoods, which were published in all languages, including English, and appeared in many esoteric journals including those of the American Psychiatric Association.  They had been suspended many times for writing things the government did not approve about the stresses of the Communist Ideal as opposed to Democratic writings of such people as Sir Thomas Jefferson and Herr Professor Doktor Sigmund Freud.  Their only son received the private tutoring of both courageous parents who were shunned by higher ups and Commissars in Moscow, who attempted first to censor everything the Doctors Rabinowitz published and second to prevent their brilliant thoughts to be expressed outside the Soviet Union, as well as inside Russian academic circles.  The CIA arranged to have the family defect in New York City when they came to ostensibly attend an annual grand meeting of the APA.  Two assassination plots were thwarted by Homeland Security.  The President’s own Secret Service was involved and guarded carefully the quarters at St. David’s underground facility where all the Rabinowitzes were sequestered and very closely guarded.  Ivan was afforded special educational opportunities at Universities in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, MD, the site of Naval Academia and the origins of Navy’s famous football teams.  Ivan starred as the great quarterback and won for them the College Championship.  As it became much safer for the family, they were allowed to move to Denver, Colorado, where their brilliant son enrolled in Alabaster where the Sokolowskis had brought Helen.

One could say the match was made in Heaven, easily, because it was.  Ivan met with Helen and their plight was trothed.  They fell in love immediately and were hard to separate for four whole years while both of them would garner every single prize available in academia and athletics.  Besides, they were a handsome item of society.  Magazines just loved them and their grand accomplishments, and their beauty as a couple.  Just before their graduation, when Helen secretly was pregnant and the couple had been secretly betrothed and married in a Catholic Campus Church, they disappeared.  The kidnapping was done by some professionals and was successfully accomplished with not a word to anyone.  Neither Russians nor Americans came forward.  Everyone involved, including highly placed officials of the USA and Russia seemed baffled.  Speculations flew in all directions and even after six whole months, no one came forward to announce the whereabouts of Ivan and his Helen.  The parents and police set up a fund and offered millions for the information that could bring them back, alive.  Though many claimed the millions, there was no information that was valuable.

Two years had passed and most gave up their hopes that Ivan and his Helen were alive.  The parents offered all they owned, to no avail.  The Sokolowskis and Rabinowitzes became fast friends and met at frequent intervals to try and ferret out the guilty parties.  No successes were reported.  Their children had just vanished and no traces gave a clue to what had happened.

Ivan and his pregnant Helen had been whisked away by Theodore Q. Clinton and his elite group of intellectuals who claimed to have the smartest people on the Planet, Earth, as members.  They were secretive and had a code of languages that was exclusive to the members who could easily discern the key to speaking Earthy in amongst each other.  It was loosely based on old Enigma, which in its secret form of Earthy, was not broken by anyone without a special key.  Some huge amounts of money had been offered by outsiders for the key.  The code word was one’s own heartbeat, distinctive ID for all the members of the Earth Intelligentsia Incorporated Society, EIIS, or EYES, from the pronunciation.  When Helen was quite pregnant her recorded code was double, a heartbeat for the fetus and a heartbeat for Helen.  At the time of entry into EYES, Helen and Ivan and Joachim, the name of their first child, were duly coded in and had the keys to Earthy, their new language.  Their quarters were completely simplified: three tiny bedrooms, one large computer room, a tiny kitchen, a large living-dining room, fiber-optic windows for suffused sunlight throughout.  The most distinctive feature of their new home was a customized computer console with huge monitors, television, radio, short-wave, (KW,) long-wave, (LW,) middle-wave, (MW & AM,) and ultra-short-wave, (UKW,) for FM radio and TV channels, as well as citizens-tuned radios for CB communications and an old fashioned telegraph machine for Morse-coded type messages on which Earthy could be quickly sent to all the members of EIIS.  The founder, Clinton, organized internal conferences for the members who were so inclined to discuss their ongoing projects and discoveries.  If there were advances made that would be beneficial to the outside folks, the ideas were introduced completely free of charge in such a way as to hide the sources and the creative members of EIIS.

Sir Ivan and his Lady Helen soon discovered that private liaisons with their neighbours and their colleagues were quite commonplace.  They often led to sexual adventures, and extra pregnancies, all quite acceptable to all concerned.  All the love affairs were openly acknowledged and encouraged by the members.  There seemed to be no envy here.  Some members had the reputation for fertility and potency and all society was geared to take advantage of the procreative talents of the few.  No love affairs seemed to disturb the tranquil intercourse of their society.  Helen became a kind of Queen Bee to the rest while Ivan was the Don Juan of his circle.  As younger much more vigourous new members they were often sought out for these love affairs and everyone was happy with them.  It seemed to Helen and her Ivan that a plethora of aunts and uncles, grandpas and grandmas, were always present to make their lives more comfortable and to provide things like live-in baby-sitting, cooking, cleaning an some decorating and house repairs.  Electronic experts did abound for any quirks of their computers which arose.

Sir Ivan and his Helen and their newborn Yoky, as he was nicknamed, would miss their biological beginnings with their parents but they quickly realized there was another family surrounding them of huge proportions.  Their new neighbours, Tom and Janette Applebee, with their three kids, Sean, Pierre and Maggie, who had lived here in the underground huge village of Helvetica for over a decade, befriended them and showed them all the ropes, the ins and outs and introduced them to their friends.  Tom and Ivan hit it off with their shared interest in modern music; Janette and Helen were enthralled by their shared interest in ancient art forms, pottery and sculpture as well as classic mathematics, geometry, algebra and trigonometry.  All the members of EIIS were encouraged to keep track of their own biological and social beginnings, without, of course, making any contact which would compromise security.  Outside publications were allowed so long as the authorship was never linked to EIIS.  Conferences could only be attended if there was a strictly followed procedure of disguise and aliases to protect the integrity of EIIS.  Clinton arranged a weekly scientific and a weekly artist conference for all members.  These were well attended an lively in exchanges of ideas and information.

Helen and Ivan became aware that many open rendezvous were e’er occurring.  In fact, they recognized that as the newcomers they were being urged to share their obvious fertility and potency great talents, almost if, there was a planned renewal of the gene-pool of the underground society.  Without significant in-fighting, Helen became a kind of Queen Bee while her Ivan was appointed winning stag of all the females in the herd of ready females in the large community.  It was as if Helen acted like the famous Catharine of ancient Russia or the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria who would eventually have many children by just as many men as could approach her.  Likewise, Ivan was like the Scottish poet, Robert Burns, who went about the countryside seeking out receptive women and thus seducing many with his charming poetry and and thus begetting many children.  He could also be so likened to the Brigham Young of yesteryear who had some 50 wives and over 150 offspring.  Marriage still had spiritual meaning while the population size was more determined by Helen and her Ivan and similar good members who were potent and quite fertile.

In many ways, the younger couples had a plethora of built in baby-sitting grandmas and older aunts as well as grandpas and older uncles who would chip in for the house repairs and garbage details.  Another important member, male of female was the electronics experts who could troubleshoot the computing consoles and keep all of them in tip-top form.  The leader and the founder, Theodore Q. Clinton, was ever present, smiling and encouraging for all to find their niche and optimize their time for thinking and creating.  Technical support for everything in art and science was available.  Technicians were themselves supported by myriads of modern manuals and learning opportunities for all the new advances.  Helen and her Ivan conceived that they were self-contained like a very modern USS Enterprise.  Clinton was thus seen as a modern Captain or Commander Kirk, or Jean la Duc, who were seeking out new worlds and going where Humanity had never been!  Clinton really liked the analogy and quickly named his associates the Star Trek Adventurers.  Helen was nicknamed Seven of Nine, and her Ivan took the moniker of the half-breed Vulcan, Mr. Spock.

Security was breached one summer day and soon after, all was lost when two atomic bombs destroyed the underground society of EIIS.  The KGB and CIA co-operated in this, as a clandestine operation, KILL THE EGGHEADS, was carried out and covered up as an accidental explosion of some old warheads that both the Americans and Russians had secretly sequestered just for this kind of eventuality.  Every single member was vapourized and all the infrastructure was strewn up into the atmosphere as the largest mushroom cloud for years occurred.  Nothing was recorded that could have implicated anyone, so it was publicized as some big accidental, harmless damage with the loss of some one thousand innocents up on the surface of the foothills of the Rockies.  The funerals were lavish and attended by officials of all governments.

THE END
