Dear Envita, I would like to refer you to the extensive
investigation of FIBROMYALGIA done by Mayo Clinic in the 1980s reported in
their own archives, It helped me a lot
for my own symptoms and for those of my patients. Mayo Clinic referred to the disorder as
TENSION MYALGIA and recommended four approaches. 1. Tell the patient you know what it is. 2. Find some form of activity that makes the
patient feel better, such as water aerobics.
3. Avoid all pain-killers, steroids, local anaesthetics and
anti-inflammatories. 4. Be willing to
sit and listen to the patient for about an hour, weekly. Mayo's suggested a trial of antidepressants,
if indicated. They suggested that the
diagnosis means that every possible other diagnosis has been clearly excluded,
including Lyme Disease and Infectious Hepatitis. Every test MUST be negative or
non-diagnostic. I participated in the
Chronic Pain Committee at Marshfield Clinic.
The article in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings was extremely helpful and
instructive. Sincerely, Izzy Sommers, MD
