Vive Obama
Vive Obama?
We in Canada have witnessed coronations of Kings and Queens of Great Britain on a regular basis, although, it has been a long time since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned. The traditional chant, when ascension to the throne was due to death of a monarch, was "The King is dead! Long live the King!"
I believe the French started the tradition with "Le Roi est mort! Vive le Roi!" Certainly, the Spaniards and Portuguese have similar rallying cries, as in the Mexican cry, "Viva Zepata!" The inauguration of Barack Obama has the same feeling of import. Is it time for Americans to proudly shout? Will "The President is out! Long live the President!" make as good a movie as Viva Zepata? I would be shouting happily, if I were a U. S. citizen. As a Canadian citizen, I'm shouting happily for Obama's ascension to the presidency of the U. S. A.

these two letters to the editor are the only two of more than 50 printed by the welland tribune... they are very nostalgic. Enjoy!
