KNEE-JERKS

A Thought or Two in Iambic Pentametre

Mechanical responses are just that,

A knee-jerk reflex that is mindless, soulless

And devoid of meaning.  For example,

If a person has the fixed idea

That a Muslim person is inferior

To other people, he or she,

Would just respond to questions all about

The Muslim folks in ways that are derogatory

And demeaning.  Just suppose

That other person is a Christian or

A Jew, then war or genocide would not

Be ugly thoughts or worth objecting to,

Despite the fact that human beings are human

Beings, Muslim, Jew or Christian, eh?

Annihilation would be part of their

Behaviour without thinking that the murdering

Of Muslims is quite unacceptable.

Comparing attitudes, a Muslim

Man and woman, would be just as interested

In the safety of their children

And their education, as a Christian

Man or woman or a Jewish man

Or woman.  I heard some surprising views

Of Muslims celebrating 911

And of Christians cheering when Hussein

And bin Laden were assassinated,

Eh?  Perhaps it shouldn’t have been so

Surprising since responses were a built-in,

Mindless, soulless reflex to profound

Beliefs about superiority,

Inferiority and strong dogmatic

Teachings, plus political false propaganda,

Which was once called The Big Lie,

Throughout the second great World War, “to end

All wars.”  We’ve seen dramatic huge retaliations,

Escalations and annihilations,

Quite repeatedly.  As usual,

The histories are written by the victors.

This must apply to legends also, such

As Biblical accounts.  They tend to re-

Confirm and re-affirm the knee-jerk thinking

That will damage all of us, anew.

Is this the “Truth of Life?”  Will wars and genocides

Recur forever or will “Global Village”

Making be conducive to reducing reflex

Thinking and behaviour?  I remain

So cautious in my optimism that

The iPhone and the iPod will unite

The younger people who will be our leaders

For more Love and less destructive knee-

Jerk conflicts.  Cautious, yes, but still so optimistic,

I remain,
